The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II

As I was looking through my postcards I found this postcard of Queen Elizabeth II, Her Most Excellent Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second and thought what a beautiful woman she is. Having my interest piqued I found a couple of postcards from her Coronation which occurred on June 2nd, 1953.

Being American we do not have royalty and can only live the pomp and circumstance vicariously, but it must be absolutely amazing to be a part of a Coronation.

Could you imagine what it would be like to be 27 years old and have this coach arrive to take you to your coronation where you will be crowned Queen?

The postcard has more information about the coach itself and the route that Queen Elizabeth traveled, but I am 100% sure nothing could compare with seeing this gold coach in person.

But it doesn’t stop there – Queen Elizabeth was then transported to Westminster Abbey for the Coronation.  Westminster Abbey is now a World Heritage Site that has thousands of years of history.  I was amazed to learn that mostly all coronations were held there since 1066, along with numerous royal weddings. Having only seen Westminster Abbey from the outside I can attest it is a magnificent structure and can only dream what it would be like to walk down the approximate 300 foot aisle towards your coronation.  My Westminster Abbey postcard has a view of the outside of the Abbey.

With the opulence of the Coronation Coach and Westminster Abbey it is no wonder the Coronation Chair can hold its own.  It looks like just a wooden chair, but if you have time consider doing an internet search about the Stone of Scone also known as “the Stone of Destiny”.  This stone has a history all its own and is currently in Scotland and will only leave Scotland when there is a coronation in Westminster Abbey. The Coronation Chair was ordered by King Edward I to be created specifically to enclose the Stone of Scone. If you look directly under the seat of the chair you can see the Stone of Scone.

It must have been fascinating to be a part of the Coronation and with the present day internet you can relive the coronation any time you want with the videos that are available.  I think it was worth the few minutes to be a part of the grandeur of the occasion, even if I had to go back to my four-door sedan and soft sofa.
